The Tea Tree (melaleuca alternifolia) is a member of the Myrtaceae family and is an indigenous species to Northern New South Wales, Australia. The oil is found within the cells of the leaves, and as the Tea Tree is extremely fast-growing it is constantly renewable, ensuring that no trees are harmed or destroyed.

Tea Tree Oil was used by aborigine tribes for thousands of years, crushing the leaves into mudpacks. Folklore told of a magical lagoon, in which the local tribe bathed for various heath benefits. In fact, it was a pond into which tea tree leaves had fallen, creating a natural spa.

In recent years, tea tree oil has become quite popular all over the world. For so many years, it was a "secret" known only to Australians. Captain Cook was the first westerner known to discover this secret during his exploration of Australia. After finding that its aromatic, resinous leaves made a satisfying substitute for proper tea, he named this tree. One hundred and fifty years later, an Australian government chemist named A. R. Penfold studied tea tree leaves and discovered many of the properties that have made it so popular in recent years. In the 1940's, tea tree oil subsequently became such an essential commodity in Australia that the Australian government exempted producers from military service.
